Three of the Worst Car Accidents in U.S. History

Although car accidents statistics tragically report that there are fatal auto accidents once every 15 minutes for a total of 94 deaths per day and 33,963 every year, it’s logical to suspect that there are some deadly car accidents that could skew the data, but what kind of deadly car accidents could be so catastrophic that they’d actually have statistical results?

Here are a few of the worst auto accidents whose tragic tolls might have had such effects.

Washington County, Maryland
On January 19 of 2009, awful winter conditions caused a minimum of 20 accidents in a single night in Washington County, Maryland. The worst of these deadly car accidents was a massive 35 car and seven tractor trailer pile-up, which killed two people and injured another 35 — 12 of whom were in serious condition afterwards.

Virginia’s I-81
The I-81 in Virginia is well known as being particularly treacherous, but on Independence Day of 1998, there was one of the most horrifyingly deadly car accidents of all time. A storm passing through the area caused a car carrying six innocent people to hydroplane and soar across the road’s meridian, crashing straight on with a tractor trailer. Everyone involved in the accident died, including the truck driver.

Tennessee’s I-75
A little bit after nine in the morning on December 11, 1990, a dense fog rolled through Tennessee, covering a stretch of I-75. The massive cloud caused a 70 car pile-up that stretched for half a mile and killed 13 people. To make matters worse, it took 33 different fire companies to respond to all of the car fires, making things more chaotic. The incident was so tragic that it led to Tennessee’s installation of a fog early warning system.

Hopefully now you realize how the worst car accidents might mess up the data just a little bit. That being said, it’s still wise to be safer than sorry. Deadly car accidents still happen every day, and for the most menial of reasons.
